Copper and Silver are well known for fighting infections, but German researchers found that copper coatings eliminates the Covidvirus. The same couldn’t be said for silver.
The study—which has just been published in the journal Scientific Reports—analysed the antiviral properties of surfaces coated with copper or silver.
Specifically the researchers from Ruhr-Universitдt Bochum and the Bergmannsheil University Hospital looked at a so-called “sputtering system” where the thinnest layers or tiny nano-patches of the metals are released as antibacterial ions.
When applied to Sars-Cov-2 the thin copper layers significantly reduced the viral load after only one hour. Sputtered silver surfaces, on the other hand, had only a marginal effect, and silver nanopatches did not impress the virus either.
“We demonstrated a clear antiviral effect of copper-coated surfaces against Sars-Cov-2 within one hour, while silver-coated surfaces had no effect on viral infectivity,” the research concluded.
