This year’s winners of the North American Copper in Architecture Award showcase the use of copper in both new & refurbished buildings across the USA & Canada.

11 projects were picked by a panel of judges as this year’s award winners. Based on the presence and use of copper and copper alloys the winning buildings were an eclectic mix encompassing historic, modern, or otherwise.

The four new buildings included the CHUM Auditorium, Havergal College, Lubber Run Community Centre and St Joseph’s Chapel. The seven refurbishment projects included Lupton Hall, Adler Planetarium, the Utah Governor’s mansion and the Mississippi Country Courthouse.

Started in 2008 the Awards have become a prestigious yearly competition. Past winners include notable buildings such as the Colorado State Capitol, Canadian Parliament buildings, Harvard Law School, Plaza Hotel and St. Patrick’s Basilica.

Copper has typically been used as a preferred formal and decorative element in government architecture, which is reflected in the inclusion of several courthouse and similar projects, and is important to the development of certain cities’ vernacular architecture.

Larry Peters, Project Manager & Architectural Applications Specialist for the USA Copper Development Association said about this years Awards: “Answering the growing demand to meet environmental goals using sustainable building materials, the 2022 winners demonstrate a perfect balance of maximizing green material with longevity, creating architectural masterpieces for generations to come.”
