The global spend on electric vehicle charging at home will exceed $16B in 2026, up from $3.4B in 2021 says a new snapshot.
Those are big numbers, but the biggest shake up could be how we go about making sure our homes can actually handle it.
It’s clear that the way homes use and store energy is about to change. By 2026 over 21M households globally will be charging cars using a home wallbox, a big jump from the 2M doing it now.
Charging at home is far cheaper & more convenient than public charging, and you can expect governments and car makers to help support the trend through policies and subsidies.
Home owners will also need to get ready and talking to an electrician or cabler is probably a smart first step. Most homes just aren’t wired to handle the impact that energy storage (especially from solar panels on the roof) and car charging will bring.
Here in Australia we’ve already developed the Smart Wired Essentials standards for renewable energy, battery storage and car charging. Your cabler or electrician can help you plan what, how and where you want these features to be, for example ensuring the pathways required to run cables to the Solar and Battery areas are considered and planned for in the planning stages.
Energy storage at home with the ability to quickly charge your car is coming, there’s no doubt about it.Getting the wiring in place when you’re building or renovating obviously makes the most sense, but making an existing home charging ready is also still doable.
Our homes are fast becoming mini power hubs, but we need to help them get there as efficiently, cleanly and cheaply as possible.
