South Australia’s potential for investment, jobs and exports growth in the copper sector will be the focus of a major conference to be opened today by the Minister for Energy and Mining Dan van Holst Pellekaan.
Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan said global copper experts from South America, North America, Asia and Europe will join highly regarded speakers from Australian industry, research institutions, government and Indigenous Business Australia.
“The Marshall Government is taking a pro-business approach to ensuring the state is competitive with a dynamic economy that provides job opportunities,” Minister van Holst Pellekaan said.
“Mining makes an important contribution to our state, and the copper industry is one of our greatest growth opportunities.
“In the 12 months to February 2018, 261,684 tonnes of copper were produced in South Australia with a value of $2 billion; making up 17 per cent of the State’s goods exports.
“The Marshall Government embraces the opportunity to work collaboratively with the mining and exploration industry, land owners and native title groups to unlock the copper resources exploration in South Australia, supported by initiatives such as our Stronger Partners, Stronger Futures program.
“Our aim is to transform that resource potential into investment, jobs and exports that generate business opportunities throughout the supply chain.”
International Copper Association Australia CEO John Fennell said copper demand is continuing to increase.
“Copper demand keeps rising in a greener, digital world, but the industry faces big challenges to not only increase supply, but meet growing environmental standards,” Mr Fennell said.
“Innovation in how we mine and process copper is crucial and Australia – and particularly South Australia – can be at the forefront of that change with the right policies, investment and attitude.”
Presentations will cover the copper value chain from discovery to innovation; the latest trends in the international copper industry; developments in innovation and research; exploration in Australia insights from the PACE Copper initiative and the collaboration between the resources sector and Aboriginal interests.
