As a long-term member of the International Copper Association Australia, Glencore Australia holds an important place in the nation’s copper value chain and broader resources sector.
Across Queensland, Western Australia the Northern Territory and New South Wales, the company operates a diversified portfolio spanning copper, coal, zinc/lead and nickel/cobalt.
Glencore is Australia’s largest producer of cobalt, zinc, lead and nickel. It is also Australia’s largest producer of coal, with 16 active mining operations.
At the centre of the critical and strategic minerals story is Mount Isa Mines in North Queensland, the hub of Glencore’s copper and zinc-lead-silver processing activities across the region.
Located in a city of about 18,000 residents, the operation includes the long-life George Fisher underground zinc mine, mineral processing and smelting operations and support and administrative services. This integrated footprint gives Mount Isa an enduring role in regional employment, industrial capability and Australia’s export supply chain. Glencore is also assessing the feasibility of re-opening the Black Star Open Cut zinc, lead, copper and silver project and has outlined a planned capital investment of A$2.5 billion in north Queensland over the next six years.
Glencore’s own underground copper operations reached the end of their economic mine life in July 2025, after about 70 years of production. Now Glencore plays an important role sourcing copper from third-parties to process at the Mount Isa smelter and copper refinery in Townsville for export through the Port of Townsville.”
Copper processing strength
Mount Isa Mines remains a critical processing hub even as its copper mining profile has changed. Since the closure of Mount Isa Mines’ 70-year-old underground copper mines in July 2025, Glencore’s copper smelter has transitioned to treating 100% third-party concentrates, from mines across north-west Queensland as well as interstate.
That transition is significant because it reinforces the Mount Isa smelter’s role as a regional processing asset, preserving industrial capability and supporting a wider ecosystem of copper producers.
The processing chain extends to Townsville, where copper anodes from Mount Isa are refined into 99.995% pure copper cathode before shipment to domestic and international markets.
This mine-to-market pathway demonstrates Glencore Australia’s strength not only in mining, but in value-added metals processing and export logistics. It also highlights the importance of sustaining Australian refining capacity at a time when secure supply chains and sovereign processing capability are increasingly valued.
“From Mount Isa to Townsville, Glencore’s copper pathway remains one of regional Australia’s most important integrated metals supply chains.”
Zinc , nickel and cobalt breadth
While copper processing is central to the story, Glencore Australia’s broader metals portfolio strengthens its long-term presence across the country.
In zinc and lead, the company mines at Mount Isa (its George Fisher Mine) in North Queensland and at McArthur River Mine in the Northern Territory, with a zinc-lead concentrator, zinc-lead filter plant and lead smelter at Mount Isa enabling further onsite processing before export.
McArthur River Mine zinc is transported to the Bing Bong loading facility on the Gulf of Carpentaria for export, extending the company’s logistics reach into the Northern Territory. Meanwhile, lead produced at McArthur River Mine can be transported to Mount Isa for processing at Glencore’s lead smelter.
In Western Australia, Glencore’s Murrin Murrin operation gives the company a major position in nickel and cobalt.
Murrin Murrin is a world-class nickel and cobalt resource and says its fully processed nickel and cobalt are exported from Kwinana, south of Perth.
Together, these zinc, lead, nickel and cobalt operations show that Glencore Australia is not defined by one commodity alone, but by a diversified metals platform with national scale.
People and pathways
Glencore’s own careers material makes clear that its workforce development programs are a core part of its operating model.
The company says its people are fundamental to its success, and it highlights investment in selection, training and development to help employees build their careers and skills.
Across its metals business in North Queensland, these pathways include an Indigenous Employment Program, Vacation and Graduate Programs, an Apprenticeship Program, a School Leavers Program and a Girls for Mining Mentorship Program.
That emphasis matters in regional centres such as Mount Isa and Townsville, where major employers play a direct role in building local skills pipelines and long-term career opportunities.
By supporting apprenticeships, school leavers and under-represented groups, Glencore strengthens both its workforce and the communities that sustain its operations. For a company with a large industrial footprint, investment in people is not an adjunct to operations; it is part of how long-term operational resilience is built.
“Our people are fundamental to our success. A diverse workforce is essential for sustainable business growth.”
