New geological insights from Geoscience Australia’s Delamerian Project have strengthened the case for South Australia as a major future source of copper, gold and critical minerals, highlighting the prospectivity of a vast, largely undercover region extending across South Australia and neighbouring states.
By integrating extensive geochemical, geophysical and drilling datasets, the project delivers a clearer regional picture of mineral systems and identifies distinct metallogenic belts that can help explorers better target prospective areas. While the work does not define new resources or estimate mineral volumes, it provides an important geological foundation for the next phase of exploration.
The findings align strongly with the message from Copper to the World 2026: the future runs on copper, and new discoveries matter because copper is not just a material, but an enabler of electrification, renewable energy, grid expansion, digitalisation and modern infrastructure.
They also reinforce Australia’s broader strategic position in global copper supply. The global President of ICA, Juan Ignacio Díaz, noted that Australia holds the world’s second-largest copper reserves, while Australian companies account for 15% of global copper production, making the country one of the most important regions for the industry’s next phase of growth.
For South Australia, that creates a significant opportunity. But geology alone is not enough: turning potential into production requires sustained investment in pre-competitive geoscience, exploration, permitting, innovation and project development, particularly in a market where bringing a new copper mine from discovery to operation can take around 15 to 18 years.
As demand grows across clean energy, electric vehicles, digital infrastructure and broader human development, copper’s role becomes more central — and so does the importance of building supply that is modern, responsible and available in time. The Delamerian Project is encouraging because it helps improve the targeting, confidence and momentum needed to convert geological promise into long-term copper supply.
