Sandfire Resources is a powerful example of how Australian copper producers are stepping up to meet the challenges of decarbonisation, supply security, and innovation – and how collaboration through the International Copper Association Australia (ICAA) is helping accelerate that journey.

Over the past few years, Sandfire has grown into a global copper producer of significance, with modern processing hubs in two of the world’s most prospective copper belts – the Iberian Pyrite Belt in Spain and the Kalahari Copper Belt in Botswana.

From its origins at the high‑grade DeGrussa copper‑gold discovery in Western Australia, the company has transformed its portfolio through the acquisition of the MATSA copper operations in Spain and the development of the Motheo open pit mines in Botswana, positioning Sandfire to support the green energy transition with reliable, responsibly produced copper. Sandfire’s purpose to “mine copper sustainably to energise the future” is underpinned by a sustainability framework that embeds environmental, social and governance considerations into every decision.

As demand for copper rises in line with electrification and net zero commitments, Sandfire is focused on maximising production while reducing its footprint and making a positive contribution to people, host communities, and the environments in which it operates.

At MATSA and Motheo, the company is investing in modern processing infrastructure, advanced water management, and progressive rehabilitation, as well as initiatives that generate enduring socio‑economic benefits for local communities. This commitment to high standards has been recognised over many years through awards for exploration success, project development, and environmental excellence.

Sandfire is also playing an important role in ICAA’s drive to lift knowledge‑sharing and innovation across the broader copper ecosystem. ICAA’s Roadmap to Zero highlights that no single organisation can deliver zero‑emission copper mining alone, and that new, collaborative digital infrastructure is needed to connect producers, governments, universities, research organisations, and METS companies. In partnership with UNSW , Austmine and leading members such as Sandfire, ICAA is developing the ConnectOre digital knowledge platform – a collaborative impact platform designed to aggregate dispersed research, operational learnings and emerging technologies in one searchable, FAIR‑aligned environment (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

ConnectOre will provide practical insights on priority challenges such as zero‑emission mining, orebody knowledge, water and tailings management, automation, artificial intelligence, and community engagement, drawing on the real‑world experience of companies like Sandfire operating across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory regimes.

As a committed member of the ICAA, Sandfire’s journey from Australian explorer to a global, sustainable copper producer shows what is possible when commercial ambition, strong ESG performance and open collaboration come together in support of a low‑carbon future.
