Austral Resources has joined the International Copper Association Australia as a growing Queensland copper producer, advancing a dual‑hub, multi‑mine strategy to deliver long‑life, responsibly produced copper for the energy transition.
Austral Resources has joined the International Copper Association Australia at a time of rapid growth in its Queensland copper business, cementing its role in supplying the metal essential for electrification and decarbonisation. The Mt Isa–based producer is scaling up from a strong foundation of existing cathode production, new mine development and an expanding regional pipeline of copper assets.
Austral operates in Queensland’s Gulf Country and Mt Isa district, a world‑class copper and base metals province in northwest Queensland. From its Mt Kelly heap leach and solvent extraction–electrowinning (SX‑EW) plant, the company produces LME‑quality copper cathode from open‑cut oxide ore, feeding into global supply chains that demand traceable, high‑quality metal. The Mt Kelly facility has a nameplate capacity of 30,000 tonnes of copper cathode per year, providing a robust processing backbone for the company’s growth strategy.
Alongside its operating assets, Austral is building out a substantial project pipeline across more than 1,300–2,100 square kilometres of highly prospective exploration tenure in the heart of the Mt Isa copper belt. The company holds a JORC‑compliant resource base of more than 50 million tonnes at around 0.7–0.8 per cent copper, giving it a large contained copper inventory to underpin long‑term development plans. This pipeline includes established and emerging deposits such as Lady Annie, Flying Horse, Lady Colleen, McLeod Hill and Enterprise, where near‑mine and regional drilling programs are planned through 2026–27 to extend mine life and grow resources.
Recent transactions and capital investments have further strengthened Austral’s position as a future mid‑tier producer. In late 2025 the company secured commitments for a $40 million equity placement to recapitalise its balance sheet, integrate the Rocklands acquisition and achieve re‑quotation on the ASX. In early 2026, Austral announced the acquisition of the Lady Loretta mine, significantly increasing its copper pipeline and consolidating its footprint across the broader Mt Isa copper system. In parallel, the company is accelerating its exploration and development at the Rocklands copper‑gold project and other targets, with the goal of building a multi‑mine, multi‑hub copper business targeting sustainable production of around 50,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over more than 20 years.
Austral’s growth agenda is closely aligned with Australia’s ambition to be a reliable supplier of the copper required for renewable energy, electric vehicles and grid upgrades. By combining low‑cost oxide cathode production with the future potential of sulphide processing hubs, the company aims to contribute meaningful new volumes of responsibly produced copper into domestic and international markets. As it advances this strategy, Austral emphasises disciplined consolidation, operational resilience, and a commitment to responsible development across its communities and environments.
Welcoming Austral Resources as a new member, International Copper Association Australia Chief Executive John Fennell said: “Austral’s growing copper business in northwest Queensland is exactly the kind of modern, long‑life production Australia needs for the energy transition, and we are delighted to have them join the International Copper Association Australia as an important new member.”
