Cutting Emissions Key Step To Net Zero Copper Mines

Copper Weekly Brief – Week of 6th March 2026

Market overview Copper prices were volatile but ultimately firmed this week, with benchmark contracts around US$5.75–5.80/lb (roughly US$12,900–13,050/t) by 4–6 March. From the January record high near US$14,500/t, prices…

A new report lays out the steps that copper mines will need to take on ventilation and emissions reporting if they are to reach the goal of net zero mining.

Ventilation and Emission Reporting is the fifth roadmap to explore pathways to low emission copper mining following the earlier Roadmap, Water, Materials Movement, and Mineral Processing.

The report is a unique collaboration between the resources sector, government, universities and the mining technology industry to identify cutting edge innovation to support the copper industry achieve more sustainable mining.

The research explores the critical role of ventilation in copper production—especially for underground mines—as well as the complex challenges facing companies as they progress site emission reductions.

It presents five key emission impact themes including ventilation design, thermal management, air quality control and emission monitoring, as well as detailed innovation and technology guides. It also suggests a range of catalyst pathways to unlock innovation from transactional models to research and industry consortia.

Ventilation and Emission Reporting looks beyond mere operational necessity, but covers employee safety, environmental stewardship, and assurance. An efficient ventilation system will impact the energy intensity and operating costs of a mine while contributing to a site’s emission profile and operational viability.

“Innovation is critical”, said John Fennell, from the International Copper Association Australia. “The new report identifies systemic barriers in the industry, challenges traditional methodologies, and fosters a culture of collaboration and knowledge exchange to foster real change.”

“Every copper producer and each copper operation will face its own pathway to decarbonisation, but Ventilation and Emission Reporting suggests just what can be done together.”

Ventilation and Emission Reporting was supported by International Copper Association, Aeris Resources, Anax Metals, Evolution Mining, Copper for Tomorrow CRC Bid, Glencore, MMG, Newmont, Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML), PanAust, and Sandfire Resources. The ICAA Roadmap to Zero Project is supported by the NSW Government.
